We Told You So

According to the October 27 issue of The Week, Germans are beginning to realize what conservatives (American-style) the world over have always known - Socialism doesn't work (pun intended).

Removing the work incentive of the people by having government provide for their needs is the quickest route to high unemployment and high taxes. Under socialism, the dwindling number of people who are motivated to succeed are punished with ever increasing taxes, in order to pay for welfare services provided to the growing number of slackers.

The original article was published in the German daily newspaper Die Welt, and states:
Only now are we coming to realize that the "benevolent paternalism" of a generous government did more harm than good.

Hasn't the failure of Socialism as a defining political doctrine been proven enough times already?
The Germans apparently didn't learn the lessons of their first socialist experiment - Nationalsozialismus.

Well, maybe they'll get it right next time.
